Dicas e Curiosidades

Did you know that the mattress is one of the oldest inventions in the world?

The first mattress was developed by the Romans in 3400 B.C.

The human being abandoned the cold and hard floor by joining branches, straws and leaves thereby originating a more flexible surface to sleep on. Shortly afterwards, the fillings of materials that were earlier found on the ground were substituted by skins or fabrics, forming what is nowadays called the mattress./p>

As it seems, the Romans were responsible for the development of the first mattress, which was made with organic materials such as feathers, cotton, straw, animal hair or wool. In that period (3400 B.C.), while the citizens slept on top of piles of palms, King Tutankhamen rested on a bed of ebony, a noble wood.

During the Renaissance, luxury fabrics were used in the covering of the mattress, such as velvet and silk.

In the 18th century the first mattresses upholstered with cotton were introduced.

With the emergence of the steel spiral spring during the First Industrial Revolution, Heinrich Westphal invented the spring mattresses.
