17 measures to prevent against mites.

Know what you can do to reduce the risk of allergies.

Prevention is the best defense in order to achieve more tranquil days and nights with regard to allergies. There are various measures that can be put into practice at home and, especially, in the bedroom and in the bed.

At home:

1. Keep the home and work environments clean;
2. Wash the winter clothes that were stored;
3. Leave the windows open in order to ventilate the environment and let the sunshine in;
4. Avoid tobacco smoke and active smells (domestic cleaning products);
5. Try to maintain a “healthy” domestic environment with relative levels of humidity between 50% and 60% and temperatures of 18ºC to 20ºC;
6. Do the cleaning when the allergic person is not at home.

In the room:

7. Avoid carpets and thick rugs;
8. Give preference to an easily washable floor;
9. Favour smooth walls, without wall paper;
10. Prefer simple and easily washable curtains;
11. Opt for simple furniture, with smooth surfaces and that can easily be cleaned;
12. Avoid keeping books, toys or stuffed toys in the room;
13. Ventilate and air the bedroom whenever possible.

In the bed:

14. Prefer cotton sheets to flannel ones (they can be washed at temperatures higher than 55ºC);
15 Opt for synthetic duvets (and not feather ones or blankets);
16 Use foam or synthetic pillows;
17. Resort to anti-mite covers for the mattress and pillow (should you consider it useful).

The perfect prevention measures do not exist, but you should join various methods that allow you to ensure a more appropriate domestic environment and with a lower concentration of mites.
