Getting around the heat and achieving deep, restorative sleep requires some strategies.
Sleeping comfortably when the nights get hotter and hotter can be a real challenge. The discomfort caused by the heat can make you sweat and toss and turn more often, leaving you irritable and sleepy the next day.
But there are some strategies that can help combat the heat and ensure a cool, comfortable and restful night’s sleep.
Here are some tips to put into practice:
Create a cool and comfortable environment in the bedroom
Sunlight can heat up your bedroom, so it’s essential that you keep your shutters, blinds or curtains closed during the hottest hours. Whenever the heat is on, use a fan, blower or air conditioner. When used correctly, these devices can help to significantly reduce the temperature in the room. Position the fan near the bed and direct the air conditioner towards the sleeping area for maximum efficiency.
Choose your bed linen well
Choose lightweight, breathable sheets, preferably made from natural fibres such as cotton, linen, silk or bamboo. These materials allow air to circulate and help dissipate moisture, helping to keep your body cool and dry throughout the night. Invest in a mattress protector. By regulating the temperature, it allows for extra comfort. Replace your duvet with a light blanket or just a sheet. This will prevent overheating and promote better air circulation.
Drink plenty of water during the day
Maintaining a good level of hydration throughout the day is half the battle to better sleep. However, avoid drinking large amounts before bedtime so you don’t have to get up in the middle of the night to go to the loo. Keep a bottle or glass of water on your bedside table. That way, if you wake up thirsty during the night, you don’t have to get up to get water.
Cool your body down before going to bed
Lowering your body temperature before bed can help you fall asleep faster and maintain a restful sleep. Taking a refreshing shower is a good way to relax your muscles and make it easier to fall asleep. Placing a damp towel or cold compress on your forehead, wrists or neck will immediately relieve the heat.
If even with these tips you can’t get a restful sleep, it might be time to check the quality of your mattress, base and pillow. Discover our offer and… good rest!
