Snacks, heartburn, obesity – there are many reasons not to take snacks to bed.
Eating and sleeping are two basic needs. We need and enjoy both, but we shouldn’t mix them up.
Just as we don’t sleep at the table, it’s not a good idea to eat in bed.
Here’s why:
1 – Miggles and bugs
It’s inevitable that your bed will be littered with food crumbs if you regularly snack at bedtime. Not only do you dirty the sheets and mattress, but you’re also creating a veritable feast for crumb-loving critters such as cockroaches, flies and ants. Spilled food or drink stains can also be a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi.
2 – Digestion first
It may seem like an unimportant detail, but when you eat in bed, you don’t sit as you would at the dinner table. Your digestive system is in an uncomfortable position, more inclined or horizontal. A position favourable to indigestion or acid reflux.
3 – The bed is for sleeping
There are also some harmful psychological effects of eating in bed. According to experts, the more often you eat in bed, the more your brain associates the space with activities other than sleep. While eating, you usually watch TV or series on your laptop, or browse social media. So instead of associating your mattress and pillow with a good night’s rest, your brain ends up staying awake, waiting for other activities.
4 – It’s easy to overeat
As well as cheating sleep, by eating in bed while surfing the internet or watching a film on TV, you usually end up eating more than you should. Distraction leads to eating more food, which is often associated with weight gain and blood sugar levels.
