Sleeping little or badly makes us tired, but according to a study by a US university, it can also negatively influence our emotional functioning and diminish positive states of mind such as joy or happiness.
A study by Montana State University in the United States, based on more than 50 years of research, concludes that not getting enough sleep does more than just make you tired.
Sleep deprivation can affect our emotional functioning, decrease positive moods such as joy, happiness and contentment and increase the risk of anxiety symptoms, including a rapid heartbeat.
According to Dr. Cara Palmer, Director of the Sleep Lab at this American university, quantifying the effects of sleep loss on emotions is key to promoting psychological health. “This study provides strong evidence that periods of prolonged wakefulness, reduced sleep duration and nocturnal awakenings negatively influence human emotional functioning,” she says.
